How Much Did It Cost to Make Endgame
Avengers: Endgame Made More Money Than The Entire 2020 US Box Office
Avengers: Endgame grossed more money than the US made in box office in 2020 after theaters were shut down for most of the summer.
Avengers: Endgame grossed more during its theatrical run than what the US box office made in 2020.Avengers: Endgamehit theaters in 2019, culminating a decade's worth of storytelling in the MCU. The highly anticipated film was always going to make a lot of money - just how much was up to speculation. With a $356 million budget, it's one of the most expensive movies ever made, and the film makes that clear.
It was clear thatAvengers: Endgamewas going to be huge, with its huge ensemble cast, massive battles, and completion of a story wherein Marvel had invested billions of dollars. The film broke records its opening weekend, debuting with $357,115,007 domestically in 4,662 theaters, making just a million over its budget. The film went on to gross $2,797,800,564 worldwide. It bested James Cameron'sAvataras the highest-grossing film of all time by $7 million.
Now,THRis reporting 2020's year-end box office, and it doesn't look so great. The US box office fell 80%. For the first time, China beat the US in total box office total with $2.7 billion, compared to the US's $2.3 billion. Overall, global revenue plummeted 70% this year. For context, in 2019, the US box office saw $11.4 billion in revenue. Overall, worldwide ticket sales are expected to come in just under $12 billion, compared to 2019's $42.5 billion.
It should come as no surprise that the box office faltered in 2020. The coronavirus all but crippled the theatrical marketplace, forcing most theaters to shut down for the entire summer. Most studios pushed their biggest films to 2021, while some hit streaming services. In the biggest coup of all, Warner Bros. decided that their entire 2021 slate would hit HBO Max and theaters the same day, igniting a firestorm of controversy. All of this has left the exhibition industry in a vulnerable position, forcing the US government to bail them out.
Fortunately, 2021 is already looking up. While the year has gotten off to a rocky start, with Los Angeles based productions being forced to shut down, the movie calendar is more packed than ever. A blockbuster is scheduled to be released almost every other week. Marvel will be releasing four movies this year, and, seeing as they typically dominate the year-end box office charts, they alone will be able to pick up a lot of the slack left behind by 2020. Avengers: Endgame was no fluke - the movie was specifically formulated to be a massive event, and Marvel pulled it off. With moviegoers thirsty for more, movie theaters could make a comeback in a big way in 2021 and the years to come if they can survive the next few months.
